About Lalibela Churches

Eleven monolithic churches carved from living rock. Built by King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela. Intended as a New Jerusalem for pilgrims who could not reach the Holy Land. The Church of St. George is carved in the shape of a cross. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.
