About Winter Palace

The official residence of the Russian emperors from 1732 to 1917. Now part of the Hermitage Museum. Has 1,500 rooms and 1,886 doors. The Bolsheviks stormed it in October 1917. Painted in the distinctive Elizabethan baroque green.
